Home to school travel plans from 1 September 2020 – return to school survey
The autumn term may seem a long way off, but September will be here before you know it. We know back to school preparations can be frantic, but we want to help you make travelling to school a little easier. Social distancing measures, leading to reduced space on public transport, mean the way pupils travel to and from school to keep themselves and others safe needs to change. This may mean travelling differently and getting active. Active travel such as walking, cycling or scooting should be the first choice for travelling to school if that is possible.
The Government guidelines are to avoid public transport unless you have no alternative and we would encourage you to consider alternative travel arrangements. If active travel is not an option for you and you need to use public transport, please plan your child’s journey in advance and remember to allow more time as travel may take longer. Space on the commercial public transport network is severely limited with only around 45 per cent of space available. It can’t therefore be guaranteed that a space on a normal bus, tram or train will be available for your child. We are looking at improving capacity on dedicated school services but understand that this is not always an option for every child.
Irrespective of how your child will travel to and from school, it would help to understand your plans so any improvements needed to public transport to support their journeys can be explored. We are working with Travel South Yorkshire, managed by South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive, to plan the network for September.
Please complete their short survey, which asks about your home to school travel needs from September, how your child travelled before COVID-19 and alternative travel options that are available. Complete the survey online now.
The survey is anonymous and if you don’t have access to the internet or completing the survey online you can call the Traveline team on 01709 515151 who will be happy to complete the survey on your behalf over the phone.
Please complete the survey by 12pm on Friday, 7 August 2020.
